Local Exhaust Ventilation Testing
Control of personal exposure in
the workplace can be achieved by Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) systems.
LEV is a generic term to
describe powered extraction systems removing hazardous airborne substances from
localised areas generated from operations such as welding, paint spraying or
soldering for example. LEV systems
are one of the commonest means of limiting and controlling employee exposure to
chemicals and hazardous substances thus protecting their health and welfare.
As with any engineering control
incorporating mechanical components the system is subject to “wear and tear” and
needs to be regularly tested to ensure adequate levels of performance are
maintained. The legal requirement to
regularly test is thus enshrined in the Control of Substances to Health (COSHH)
Regulations 2002 (as amended).
Regular testing should meet the
requirements of both the COSHH regulations and the recently issued Health and
Safety Executives (HSE) guidance document HS(G)258 “Controlling airborne
contaminants at work; a guide to LEV”.
HS(G)258 indicates relevant British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS)
qualifications required to demonstrate competence, which Air Tech’s consultants
hold. |
