Legionnaires disease is a potentially fatal form of pneumonia, caused by the Legionella Bacterium which is ubiquitous throughout the natural environment and can be found in lakes, rivers, reservoirs etc. It is normally contracted as a consequence of inhaling water droplets containing the legionella bacterium.

This preventable disease is associated with two main risk systems; hot and cold water systems (particularly those where an aerosol is produced i.e. showers) and with wet cooling systems such as cooling towers. It is imperative that the risks to employees, building users and the general public are thoroughly assessed and that appropriate actions are taken to prevent and minimise the potential for a legionnaires disease outbreak.
